Beginning Fly Tying Level I |
|
Instructor -
Ian
|
|
The main focus of this course is
to develop good hands-on techniques
as well as emphasis on proper fly proportions and aesthetics.
On completion of the class, the student should have the ability to tie
about 80% of the basic patterns shown in most fly-tying books.
Flies selected for the course include; rubber spider, nymphs,
streamers, wet flies and dry flies. The skills learned in tying
these flies will apply to all other flies any tier might
wish to tie.
Classes are a combination of information and instructions
concerning tying materials, tool and techniques as well as
step-by-step instruction for the flies tied in class.
The actual information and flies for each session are as
follows.

As the course progresses and students skills get better there is
more time in each session for tying flies. Students can
either tie more of the pattern we are working on in that
particular class or the instructor will provide material and
instruction for additional flies not in the manual. These
additional flies can range from some of the instructors
favorites to specific flies that students would like to learn to
tie. If you have a favorite pattern or one in particular
that is motivating you to learn to tie flies make certain to let
the instructor know and he will make certain you learn to tie it
(with the exception of advanced flies).
Students will be required to provide their own equipment and materials.
FlyMasters has put together a material kits designed for our class.
The kit contains all of the materials needed to tie five of each
pattern taught in the class.
A vise and tools are not included because experience has shown us
each person favors a different tools. We do have a basic
tying kit that has a basic vise and tools that many people use
to get started with. The price of the material kit is
$49.99 and the tying tool kit is $39.95. You can purchase
them both for the class for $75.00. The kit is a nice
value because you have material for just the flies you will tie.
Otherwise you might end up buying more material for a particular
fly in the class and then never use that particular material
again.
When you complete the Beginning Fly Tying Level I class you can
either continue on to our Level II Beginning Fly Tying class or
come to our
Intermediate and Skills Development
Tying Classes on Saturdays. You will have all the
skills to you need to fit right in for any of these classes.
Also, we have a free fly tying session on Wednesday evening from
7:00 - 9:00pm. This is an unstructured session; designed
just to provide a place and a time for tiers to get together and
enjoy this past time.

|
It is strongly suggested that students
practice outside of the class.
Instruction is one session per week (Tuesdays 7:00pm to 9:00pm or
Saturdays 9:00 - 11:00am) for five weeks.
Cost is $50.00 per student. Classes fill quickly and are
reserved on a first come first served basis.
Payment is made in advance
to confirm your reservation.
The instructor is Ian Anderson, who is
a member of the Federation of
FlyFishermen and Trout Unlimited. He has been tying flies for many years and has
taught many people this fine art. He also teaches our
Intermediate and Skills Development
Tying Classes.
