What a pretty face!
|
Called the Golden Bones of the Midwest, the common carp is a
great fish to target on a fly rod. Found in shallow
waters they are often spooky and scatter at the slightest
shadow. Because of poor eye sight they require a
little more specialized casting and there in lies the challenge.
When you get the cast right, you don't spook them and you
get one to take your fly, watch out. The take is
usually subtle but the run is long and hard. Usually
in the 15 to 20 pound range these fish take off like a train
that won't stop. It is not uncommon for
them to take you 200 plus yards into your backing more than once!
With miles of shoreline on multiple islands to cover there are tons of
opportunities for hook-ups. If you target one fish and
miss simply walk down the shore and find another fish.
Finding these fish is not the worry, hooking them and
keeping them on is.

You will be traveling to Beaver Island Michigan (view
in Google Earth) for these
beauties. Located at the Northern end if Lake Michigan,
Beaver Island is situated on a large basalt shelf. The
basalt shelf has millions of small holes and pits in it that
house nymphs, crayfish, and gobies which the carp love. There
are three other large island within an easy boat ride that offer
hundreds of miles of shoreline to fish. Beaver Island
itself is so large there are four other large lakes on it!
Beaver Island is accessed via a 20 minute flight or a two hour
car ferry from
Charlevoix Michigan. For our trip you can access the Island
via either transportation it is up to you. Some people
like the slow pace of the car ferry and others getting to the
island quicker. |

transportation anytime during the season to work around your
schedule. However, we will again be hosting a trip to Beaver
Island for Great Lakes Carp fishing in 2010. This year
we will be heading up in July and will be staying at
Glenbeigh house on the East side of Beaver Island. The house is
fully furnished so you can bring your own food or eat in
town.
There are two different groups heading up to Beaver Island
this summer. One group will arrive on July 10th, fish
for three days and leave on the 14th. The second group
will arrive on July 14th, fish for three days and leave on
the 18th. The cost of the trip is $900.00. This
covers lodging for four nights, transportation to and from the island and
three days of guided
fishing. It does not cover meals (except lunch while
you are fishing with the guide), fishing license or
gratuities for the guide. |
