FlyMasters Crawdad Round-Up This Saturday
Cooked Crawdads(07-30-2010)  Just a reminder that the next big event at FlyMasters is this Crawdad TailSaturday.  Come by the shop for our first annual Crawdad Round-Up.  The concept is simple, tie crawdad flies (which are great for smallmouth right now) and eat crawdads.  Our good friend Cecil Guidry (an authentic Cajun by the way) will be cooking up live crawdads from the Louisiana Crawfish Company with a little help from the good folks at Mudbugs Cajun Cafe.  Cecil will be adding his own special "touches" to the cooked crawdads as well as teaching a crawdad fly or two.

The tying portion of the class will focus on four productive crawdad flies (all work greClouser Crawdadat in the waters of Hot Spot CrawdadIndiana) and ways to fish them.  We will start tying flies at 12:00pm and end about 4:00pm (or later if we talk too much).  We will start eating crawdads around 2:00pm.  Because this is a special tying class the cost is $25.00.  It includes all tying materials, instructions and a healthy portion of crawdads.  If you do not wish to join us in the tying class you can still sample some Cajun crawdads for $3.00 a plate after 2:00 pm.  Click on the two flies above for larger images of a couple of the flies we will be tying.

(07-21-2010) What a fantastic trip to Mission Lodge this year!  The weather was fantastic, the accommodations top shelf, the food it's usually excellence and the fishing was stellar.  Salmon, Rainbows, Char and Grayling were caught by all and more than a few times.  If you have ever thought about heading to Alaska for a truly "once in a Lifetime" experience stop by the shop and sign up for next year.  You will not be disappointed.  Enjoy the show.

Changes to Smallmouth Size Limit
Indiana Smallmouth(07-15-2010) In case you did not see this in the last Rollcast...  it has been passed on to us at FlyMasters that there currently is a recommendation to increase the size limit on smallmouth bass in Indiana. Currently, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources is doing a comprehensive fish management rule revision. Among the many changes recommended by the Natural Resources Advisory Council is for the state to go from a 12 inch to a 14 inch limit on smallmouth bass.

While the Council made this recommendation, it now has to be approved by the Indiana Natural Resources Commission. The commission members need to hear from Indiana sport fishermen and women who are in support of this proposed change.  Log on to http://www.in.gov/nrc/2351.htm and send an email to the commission supporting increasing the size limit for smallmouth bass to 14 inches. This is good for everyone!

White Millers at Macs Island on the Au Sable
Au Sable River(07-14-2010) Ephoron leukon is a white miller fly that is present on many eastern and midwestern streams. Typically, in this part of the country they “hatch” in August and early September. TWhite Miller Flyhe nymph lives in soft muddy sediments where they forage for food with their tusks. They have a relatively long nymphal stage and a relatively short adult stage. When they transform into adults, the male nymph swims to the surface and emerges as a light tan dun just before dusk. While on the water they almost immediately undergo a second molt leaving the water as a white spinner. The first hatch can be over in as little as ten minutes. About a half hour later or so the females begin to emerge. The female duns have legs that are so small that she cannot leave the water. The over White Milleranxious males immediately fly back to the water to fertilize the eggs discharged by the females. At times this flight activity by the males is so intense and voluminous that it has been likened to a “snowstorm” in the summer! The trout feed voraciously at this time on these size 12 – 16 flies.

FlyMasters is planning a trip back to the Au Sable River in Michigan in August for some great trout fishing during this hatch. You can come and stay for one night or all the nights from August 18th through August 29th.  The dates are We will be staying at a private lodge located right on the river. Food and lodging will be provided. Fish there at the lodge, venture out, or get a guide and fish the Trophy Waters section of the Au Sable. For more information contact Gary at the shop (317-570-9811).
